(cancer of blood and bone marrow) Part 1 Leukemia is a group of cancers that have to do withe the blodd and the bone marrow. There are four types of this cancer depending if it is at the beginning stages or if it is progressed, this determines which cancer it affects. Leukemia is often referred to as lymphocytic or myelogenous. In all cancers there has to be an abnormal cell trigger it. this cell begins to multiply rapidly and over crowds the good cells. with leukemia it is usually the bone marrow that is affected. it depends on what type of leukemia you have. if you have lymphocytic white blood cells are affected. in myelogenous the red blood platelets are affected. Leukemia cases in USA In the US, leukemia occurs more frequently in males than females (Call TG et al 1994; Cartwright RA et al 2002; McNeil DE et al 2002b). In addition, Caucasians are more likely to develop leukemia than African-Americans and Hispanics (McNeil DE et al 2002a; Xie Y et al 2003) Table 1 Type of Leukemia Number of New Cases/Year Average Age at Diagnosis (years) AML 10,000 65 CLL 7,800 Over 50 CML 4,500 67 ALL 4,000 Under 10 ( found statisticson www.lef.org/protocols/cancer/leukemia) Some info on the causes of leukemia mutations are the following including inheritance, radiation exposure, chemical exposure, and chemotherapy.http://www.leukemia.org/hm_lls
Part 2 In present day, scientis are treating lukemia diffrently.Treating people with leukemia now adays with the drug erwinase helps stop the growth of cancer cells. The nutrient that the cancer cells need to survive become blocked and patients are monitered closely. clinicaltrial.gov
Part 3 It abiously be a negative affect on people for its a possible cause of death. Researchers have found to have a 3%-10% of affected people with lukemia to actually get cured. Lukemia is a very common and one of the most common child hood cancer as well as the elderly. An estimated 230,000 people in the U.S were diagnosed with lukemia last year. Part 4 In a way, treating lukemia is contreversial to many in the world. Many of the patients are naturally allergic to ingridients found in the medicine, therefore, higher risks are at stake. There are however, hospitals like St. Jude Childrens's Hospital who help the needy, and try to make a change in peoples live. Picts.
